I have decided to do something a little differently with my sewing plans this year. I’m planning to make a 9 piece capsule wardrobe. Nine garments that will go together, that I can mix ‘n match and put together in many combinations. In the past I’ve just sewn whatever I wanted to, not really thinking about how well the garments went together. I’ve decided for this year, that the most practical thing to do is to sew myself a wardrobe with pieces that will look great together and will make me feel happy, confident and strong.
My plan is to use fabrics that I have in my stash, as well as patterns I already own. I want my clothes to be colourful, so I’ve pulled mostly reds and oranges from my stash. Since I already have a lot of blacks and greys in my wardrobe I am craving more colour these days. I’m loving orange and pink in particular and I have very little of that in my closet at the moment.
I’ve been thinking about what I can implement in my daily routine to make my sewing plan work. Many sewists talk about sewing one seam a day or planning to sew 15 minutes a day. I think that this might be the best plan of attack for me and I think I’ll be able to keep to that kind of schedule. 15 minutes, or one seam or prepping a seam for sewing should work. It will make the project move along, and it doesn’t seem like a lot. No pressure, because it’s just one seam, one step to move the project forward. I’m ready for it!
The garments I want to sew for my nine piece capsule wardrobe (and this list may likely change during the year) are:
- The Miller by Merchant and Mills
- V1821 by Vogue Patterns
- V1541 By Vogue Patterns
- Persephone Pants by Anna Allen Clothing
- Wildwood Wrap Dress by Sew House Seven
- A long button up shirt, pattern undecided
- T shirt, pattern undecided
- Second Miller Waistcoat by Merchant and Mills
- A pair of very wide leg pants with a very wide waistband, pattern undecided
The Make Nine Challenge that I’m jumping into, and you can join as well, is hosted by @makeninechallenge who are Rochelle @homerowhandcraft and Paula @onehtl1ama. I will be posting my makes on the blog and on our Instagram page @theshineandrise and probably add more updates on the Instagram page as I’m making each garment, so go to our page and follow us there.
I love sewing. Having time to sew is the best. It’s such a creative and interesting space. If you sew, what do you like to sew? Or maybe you want to sew. You should definitely give it a try.
Sewing is the best!
Thank you Catherine. I definitely agree!
