The Friday Exhale: 5 Thoughts on the Week

Wow. Such a variety of thoughts this week; some will make you smile while others will hopefully intrigue you and connect in some way to your life and thoughts. Enjoy.

Have you ever tasted a Portuguese tart? I have many years ago and it was delicious! It definitely lived up to its reputation. This is the sort of pastry that I will not attempt to make myself. When my children were little and I was a stay-at-home mom, I attempted to make pastry a bunch of times. It was an exercise in frustration: time and ingredients wasted. Finally, over time, I decided to focus on what turns out well for me: muffins, loaves, cookies and simple cakes.

Although I will not try to make them, maybe I’ll visit a Portuguese bakery and bite into one of these scrumptious morsels again soon. – Maria

Sewing A Self-Drafted Bucket Bag

I sewed a bucket bag after recently listening to a podcast episode of Acquired featuring Hermes. The stories of the Kelly and Birken bags are interesting but what was even more fascinating was the fact that the bags are all made by hand. You can watch, as I did, some process videos on You Tube showing the incredible craftsmanship and care that is needed to make one of these bags. Each stitch is made with precision, years of learning, practice and repetition. According to Acquired podcast it takes approximately 20 hours to make a Birken Bag, all by hand. It’s astonishing that Hermes continues to make their bags by hand, relying on their artisans to make one bag after another with the utmost attention to detail, precision and quality.
